Masterworks
Grade
9 students must complete a MasterWork project in which they thoroughly
explore a particular area of interest. Assisted by a committee chair
and several external advisors, presentations are reviewed and assessed
by advisors and an external referee. Students must publicly defend
their Masterwork project, as a requirement of graduation.

Over The Top
Over the Top is an independent
project that is assigned each semester by the School Director to
the grades 6, 7 and 8 students. The Over the Top assignment is given
so that the School Director, teaching staff, and student colleagues
can recognize and celebrate each individual student's particular
intellectual and\or creative interests, and so that grade 6, 7,
and 8 students might better prepare for the Masterwork requirement
in grade nine.

Excursions
For
Island Pacific School Students, the classroom extends well beyond
Bowen Island. Bi-weekly excursions to the workplaces and cultural
attractions of Vancouver ensure that IPS students get a first-hand
look at the world in motion. Every Thursday afternoon, students
go on excursions of either recreational or educational nature.

Expeditions
Self-confidence
and teamwork are best taught -- and learned -- in a variety of settings.
Students get instruction in kayaking and climbing in addition to
participating in three outdoor expeditions a year:
The Garibaldi Backpacking Trip
The Manning Park Ski Trip
The Howe Sound Kayak Trip

Ultimate
The
school's main "team sport" is Ultimate. Regarded by some
as the fastest growing sport in North America, Ultimate has become
immensely popular essentially because it is a competitive team sport
without all the negativity and nonsense that can sometimes be associated
with competitive sport. Besides learning the game during the regular
Physical Education classes, IPS students have also participated
in a number of off-island tournaments.

Physical Education
The
physical education program includes classes in self-defense, martial
arts, distance running, weight training, health and nutrition, swimming,
rock climbing, first aid, scuba diving, as well as participation
in the school’s champion Ultimate team.

Community Faculty
The Community plays a very large and important role at Island
Pacific School. "Community Faculty" members come to the
school every Wednesday afternoon to share their expertise and
experiences with the students. We have been very fortunate to have
students meet directly with a broad range of fascinating
individuals.
