Community and Service
The community and service program at IPS is designed to focus on local, provincial, and global initiatives. Community and service initiatives fall loosely under three themes: (1) the environment, (2) humanitarian aid, and (3) opportunities for education.
The aim of the program is to instill a sense of citizenship and civic engagement in IPS students and, by extension, their families to act in response to the needs of a ‘community’.
In order to make the experience meaningful for students, the community service program at IPS partly guided by the Community Service Learning Model. Community Service Learning is a teaching model that combines volunteer service with classroom learning. For example, IPS continues to work collaboratively with students and teachers from Bowen Island Community School (BICS), and the Learning Centre to establish a re-use it facility called the Knick Knack Nook.
The needs of Bowen Island’s local community are met by creating a space where residents can exchange clothing and other material goods. This community service initiative began within the walls of the school when IPS an IPS parent met with our students to begin planning the project.
