Vancouver Circus School Excursion is Big Hit!

November 6, 2009 – 4:42 pm

The Grade 6/7 students’ latest excursion was to the Vancouver Circus School. Students rotated through three different activities taught by different circus school instructors. After learning some basic skills at each station they practiced their newly acquired techniques on one of three elements: the trapeze, silks, and the trampoline.

Many students conquered their personal fear of heights. To get up very high in the air, hang off, stand up (or swing) on a trapeze is a remarkable feat by any stretch. Students gained lots of height by jumping on the trampoline. A number of students enjoyed the freedom associated with jumping while others were able to demonstrate their gymnastics (or dance) training by integrating some of their moves while jumping on the trampoline. Still other students liked showing off their strength and daring, but we all learned that professional trampolines are VERY bouncy! (I was reminded of my training days as a national gymnastics athlete when I took my turn on the trampoline).

In general, students had a great time at each station and worked hard the entire time. The group was completely enthralled with the circus activities and did an amazing job of supporting and encouraging each other. I was very proud to see how well they represented themselves and the school in this unique and challenging activity. Well done, and thanks to Jordan, Scott, and Meregon of the Vancouver Circus School for keeping the kids safe while teaching them some very neat and challenging stuff. Thanks also to Graeme who assisted in chaperoning the excursion and who took the fantastic images that our community can view on flickr.
